Cyclone impacts on manufacturing firms in Mozambique

This study investigates how manufacturing companies were affected by tropical Cyclone Idai, which struck Central Mozambique in March 2019. The analysis builds upon a representative sample of 464 enterprises located the cities Beira and Chimoio interviewed 6 12 months after natural disaster. While was largely destroyed event, inland only to minor degree, thus constituting our control group. Overall, we find that cyclone had large negative effect on income profits, especially month immediately following landfall. Furthermore, disaster hit some types firms much harder than others. For instance, businesses construction industry saw no significant decline income, whereas micro enterprises, female-owned businesses, tailors among most affected.
